No, there is no advantage to letting your pet have a litter. There are however plenty of advantages to having you pet spayed or neutered. These advantages include decreasing the chances of mammary tumours later in life, eliminating the possibility of uterine infections, and decreased urine marking behaviour. Spaying and neutering pets also helps to reduce overpopulation of cats and dogs.
We use different types of sutures. Procedures involving external non-dissolving sutures require them to be removed in 10-14 days following the surgery. Some skin sutures are absorbable and will fall out on their own over the course of about a month or so. Other types of sutures will be buried under the skin and won’t require removal. Our staff and doctors will advise you about the type used for your pet’s surgery and the appropriate care required.
This blood test measures organ function and a complete blood count (CBC). A CBC measures red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The pre-anesthetic blood screening is done along with a physical exam to assess overall health before surgery.
Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery. Pre-anesthetic testing is recommended prior to undergoing anesthesia and surgery. Please speak with our veterinary team regarding the best time to book your pet for the surgery.
