Surgery with the most benefits – including reducing your pet’s risk for certain health issues.
Try as they might, our amazing colleagues at animal rescues and shelters cannot save all the abandoned pets in our community. One way to directly help and make a difference with pet overpopulation is by spaying and neutering the pets under our care. These procedures not only prevent unwanted pregnancies, they can also protect your pet from a long list of diseases. If you have any questions about these procedures, please reach out to us at 416-481-1127.
Every patient is different, but generally speaking, it takes about 7 to 14 days for pets to recover from their spay or neuter surgery. During their recovery period, it is best they get as much rest as possible and that any type of physical activity is limited. We also advise that you do not bathe them or have them groomed for the time being. They should also stay indoors as much as possible and limit any playtime with other pets. Please do not worry. We will explain all of the post-care steps you need to follow ahead of time.
Spaying is done on female pets. It is the removal of their reproductive organs. The procedure will cause your pet to live a longer and healthier life. It minimizes their risk of developing uterine infections, breast tumours and certain types of cancers. It also improves their overall mood. Pets who are spayed tend to be less irritable and stressed, as it inhibits them from going into “heat” and releasing certain reproductive hormones.
Neutering is the surgical removal of a male pet’s reproductive organs. Like spaying, it is linked to a longer and healthier life span. Neutered pets acquire a significantly reduced chance of getting testicular cancer and other prostate issues. Neutered pets are also less likely to roam around (thus preventing them from getting traffic-related injuries), mark their territories with urine, mount other animals and display other types of aggressive behaviours.
