Unvaccinated pets are vulnerable to dozens of serious and lethal conditions such as rabies, Lyme disease, leptospirosis, hepatitis, canine influenza and so much more. Other pets in your home and community will also be vulnerable, as your pet will be more likely to spread these diseases to others. Vaccines are a convenient and cost-effective way to keep your pet as healthy as possible.
Generally speaking, puppies receive their first round of vaccines when they are about 6 to 8-weeks-old. They will need to be vaccinated once every 3 weeks until they are about 4-months-old. At this point, they would have completed their “puppy round” of vaccines. Afterwards, adult dogs will need booster shots once every year or once every 3 years all their lives to stay protected and immune against various diseases.
Vaccines fall into two groups: core and non-core. Core vaccines are mandatory for all dogs. Some, such as the Rabies vaccine, are even mandated by law. Examples of core vaccines are those that protect against Parpovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis. Non-core vaccines are optional and recommended by the vet based on your pet’s specific situation (e.g. where you live, your lifestyle). Examples of non-core vaccines are those that protect against Lyme disease and Canine Influenza.
