By achieving a healthy weight, your cat or dog will be less likely to develop underlying issues.
About 50 to 60% of all pets in the country are either overweight or obese, according to the CVMA (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association). As with humans, excess weight puts pets at risk of several types of health complications, shortened lifespans and compromised qualities of life overall. We understand how confusing it can be to figure out how to get your pet to a healthier weight. It is not as simple as “eating less and moving more.” Our team is here to help you safely manage your pet’s weight. To learn more about our weight management programs, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 416-481-1127.
During a weight management consultation, the vet will weigh and measure your pet to determine where they lie in comparison to other pets of similar age and breed. Then, based on CVMA guidelines, your pet’s lifestyle, other medical conditions, environment, and your own routine, the vet will make recommendations on how to help your pet lose (or gain) weight. They may advise you to try different types of pet food, portion sizes, feeding schedules/methods, exercises and behaviour modifications. Each weight loss or weight gain program is customized for every patient. Follow up appointments and weigh-ins will be scheduled to track your pet’s progress. Our goal with every patient is safe and long-term weight management.
A combination of several factors can cause your pet to gain excess weight. Over the years, experts in the veterinary community suggest that lack of portion control and giving pets too many treats, specifically human food scraps, are a great contributor to pet obesity. Treats should make up only 10% of a pet’s daily caloric intake. Lack of exercise and the use of food as reward are also contributing factors to pet obesity.
